Supreme Court of India Validates Summons Via Whatsapp

New Delhi Friday, 11th July, 2020: Supreme Court of India agreed to the suggestions of the Attorney General of India that serving notices and summons to people, integral to judicial processes, through instant messaging services like Whatsapp and Telegram in addition to emails, would be legally valid.

The bench said:

This innovation was needed as physical delivery of notices and summons had been difficult during the lockdown.

The CJI said:

If the sent notice/summons in message form reflects two blue ticks, then it will constitute as valid service.

Use of technology and innovation in the field of law is need of the hour and Pakistan should also adopt such measures. However, a thorough mechanism needs to be devised as technology can often be infiltrated.
